KU professor talks sports betting ahead of the Super Bowl
LAWRENCE (KSNT) - More Americans than ever before are set to place bets on the biggest wagering event of the year with the upcoming Super Bowl on Sunday.
Sports betting is now legal in 38 states across the country, including Kansas. Americans are estimated to bet $1.39 billion for the Super Bowl on Feb. 9 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, according to an annual report from the American Gambling Association.
University of Kansas Assistant Professor of Finance Justin Balthrop spoke to 27 News this week about healthy betting habits.
"Super Bowl is a time when many people do and many people who don't even normally bet will find a way to wager there," Balthrop said. "Keep it small. Keep it within your budget. And I think most importantly, don't get caught in betting on these really crazy and esoteric ideas."
Balthrop went on to say that it is smart to bet on something you know and something that doesn't seem foreign to you.
