Donald Trump has announced a raft of tariffs on products entering the United States – and there could be more to come.

The US president says he will introduce a 25% import tax on all steel and aluminium entering the country, a move which will have a huge impact on Canada.

This is a step up from the tariffs he introduced during his first presidency, when he put tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% of aluminium imports from Canada, Mexico, and the EU.

Those tariffs ended a year later after the US made a deal with those two countries, with EU import taxes remaining in place until 2021.

Trump said there will be an announcement later this week about reciprocal tariffs on all countries which tax US imports – though it’s too early to say how this could affect the UK economy.

Canada is the biggest supplier of aluminium into the US, while both Canada and Mexico are two of the US’s biggest steel trading partners.

Late last month Trump announced blanket 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico – but he delayed their introduction by 30 days after speaking with the leaders of those countries.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Monday, he said he would announce tariffs for steel and aluminium on ‘everybody’.

He’s also announced 10% blanket tariffs on all imported Chinese goods – which has resulted in retaliation from China.

With more tariffs likely to be announced this week, Metro has the full list of all tariffs Trump has introduced during his second presidential term so far.

What products could Donald Trump put tariffs on?

  • Steel – 25%
  • Aluminium – 25%
  • All Chinese goods – 10%
  • Reciprocal tariffs on other nations – neither the nations targeted or the tariffs levied have been confirmed yet

How has China retaliated?

China has introduced its own tit-for-tat tariffs on US goods, coming into effect from Monday, February 10.

  • Coal – 15%
  • Liquefied natural gas products – 15%
  • Crude oil – 10%
  • Agricultural machinery – 10%
  • Large-engine cars – 10%

China has also brought in export controls on 25 rare metals, making it more expensive for the US to buy those metals.

Some of these form key components of electrical products and military equipment, such as PCs, videogame consoles and physical games themselves – which has led to criticism from big gaming names like Nintendo and Sony.
