Curved Attic

Curved Attic is a minimal home located in Valencia, Spain, designed by Destudio. The project, as the name suggests, demonstrates how architectural intervention can transform spatial constraints into poetic advantages, particularly through its thoughtful integration of a sculptural spiral staircase that serves as both a functional element and a dramatic centerpiece.

The staircase emerges as a compelling study in material dialogue – its black iron envelope creating bold geometric forms that contrast with the warm wooden treads within. Like a piece of functional sculpture, it greets visitors with a dramatic interplay of curves that echo the building’s circular footprint. This design choice reflects a broader contemporary movement in residential architecture where utilitarian elements are elevated to become central to the home’s artistic expression.

The project’s material palette speaks to a carefully considered hierarchy of attention. The architects have orchestrated what might be called a “quiet luxury” approach – natural wood ceilings create an intimate cabin-like atmosphere, while soft-toned mortar walls act as a neutral canvas. This restraint in material selection serves a deeper purpose: to frame and emphasize the sweeping views of Valencia’s transformed riverbed below.

Perhaps the most innovative aspect of the design lies in its thoughtful dissolution of indoor-outdoor boundaries. The terrace becomes a mirror of interior functions, with each indoor space finding its outdoor counterpart. This duplication of programs – from living areas to an outdoor bath – speaks to a contemporary Mediterranean understanding of domestic space, where the line between inside and out becomes delightfully ambiguous. A hidden window that connects the interior and exterior kitchens particularly exemplifies this sophisticated approach to spatial continuity.

The removal of an existing mezzanine reveals an architectural sensitivity to vertical space, allowing the sloping roof to become a defining feature rather than a limitation. This decision transforms what might have been a compressed space into one of ethereal quality, where natural light plays across surfaces throughout the day.
