Bird flu found in black vultures near New Braunfels

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Empty shelves and surging prices are the problems consumers are facing as the egg supply feels the effects of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as the bird flu.

Detected in all states across the U.S., HPAI is a highly contagious zoonotic virus that transmits easily among wild and domestic birds.

While the disease has mostly stayed contained to affecting chickens, cows and cats, a more recent discovery of the virus was seen in black vultures in the New Braunfels area.

According to a press release, disease experts indicate HPAI is circulating among wild birds in Texas as waterbirds and waterfowl visit their wintering grounds.

The public is advised by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to assist in interrupting transmission of HPAI. 

TPWD advice included:

• Discontinuation of feeding and other activities that cause waterfowl to congregate in parks.
• Taking down all bird feeders and bird baths.
• If leaving bird feeders and bird baths out, clean them several times each week with a 10% bleach solution and watch for signs of disease.
• Do not handle any sick or dead wildlife.
• Do not allow pets to consume any wild carcasses.

As HPAI remains top of mind among many people, the transmission risk from infected birds to people remains low, according to the same release.

However, the public should take basic protective measures if contact with wild animals cannot be avoided. 

If an individual has come into contact with an HPAI-positive or suspect animal and develops signs of illness, they’re prompted to immediately contact their healthcare provider and let them know about the exposure.
