Dutch shipbuilding major Damen Shipyards Group has introduced a new range of naval support vessels. the logistics support ship (LSS) series.
As disclosed, the LSS range consists of two distinct vessel types: the LSS 9000 and LSS 11000. The ships will measure 127 meters and 140 meters in length and have 4,800 and 6,200 deadweight tons, respectively. They will be able to travel at a speed of 26 knots and accommodate a crew of 57 people.
The versatility of the LSS range will enable it to operate across multiple mission types to ensure operational readiness in any scenario. Both ships are designed to cater to the diverse needs of contemporary naval forces.
Main features of LSS
The vessels will be equipped with NATO-standard replenishment at sea (RAS) technology, RoRo capabilities, and substantial cargo transportation capacity. They will be installed with modern navigation and communication systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
The vessels are equipped with roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) capabilities and significant cargo capacity, enabling them to transport fuel, munitions, provisions, personnel, and other supplies, Damen highlighted. The LSSs are intended to support naval logistics, to help fleets operate effectively during extended deployments away from their home ports.
Furthermore, the modular design of the LSS will allow for quick adaptations to a range of mission types, including disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, and training exercises. This makes the LSS suitable for both military and civilian applications.
The design also blends military and commercial technologies, which helps manage both operational costs (OPEX) and capital expenses (CAPEX) efficiently compared to similar support vessels, the Dutch shipbuilding company said.
In addition to operational flexibility, the LSS series focuses on sustainability, addressing the growing environmental standards in naval operations. These vessels will feature advanced propulsion systems that reduce both fuel consumption and emissions, improving overall operational efficiency.
This aligns with the increasing emphasis on sustainable maritime practices while maintaining operational effectiveness.
“We have developed the LSS based on discussions with our naval clients around the world. As such, we are confident it represents an appropriate response to the operational challenges they are facing, now and in the future. The LSS offers enhanced capabilities, efficiency and sustainability at a very competitive price. As these vessels enter service, they will undoubtedly play a crucial role in supporting the strategic objective of navies around the world,” Piet van Rooij, Commercial Manager Defence & Security at Damen said.
