Topeka man charged with murder for deadly February shooting of Chavis Collins
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Shawnee County District Attorney's Office has filed murder charges against a local man in connection to the killing of a 29-year-old Topeka man.
Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced that his office has filed charges against Desmond Lindsey, 23, of Topeka, on Friday, Feb. 14. This is in connection to the shooting death of Chavis Collins, 29, of Topeka earlier in February. Lindsey's charges include:
- Murder in the first degree (premeditation).
- Murder in the first degree (inherently dangerous felony).
- Criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied dwelling.
- Two counts of aggravated assault.
- Aggravated endangering a child.
- Criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Police were called around 1 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8 to a local hospital in Topeka on reports of a person who arrived with a life-threatening gunshot wound. This individual, later identified by police as Collins, passed away due to his injuries. His death marks the second homicide investigation of Topeka in 2025.
Topeka police officers received a call about a possible shooting in the area of the 1700 block of Southeast 23rd Street on Feb. 8. Police later learned of the gunshot victim arriving at the hospital and found evidence a shooting took place at the address on Southeast 23rd Street.
Police found out there were multiple individuals inside a home that was involved in the shooting, according to the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office. Lindsey was later identified as a suspect in the investigation and turned himself in on Feb. 10.
