German Chancellor: Afghan suspect in ‘Awful’ attack must be punished and deported

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stated that the Afghan attacker who ran over pedestrians with a car in Munich should be punished and deported from Germany. He emphasized that the perpetrator should not expect any leniency from the German government.

“What has happened is awful,” Scholz told reporters. “From my point of view it is quite clear, this attacker cannot count on any mercy, he must be punished and he must leave the country.”

Scholz declared that if the incident is confirmed as an attack, all necessary measures to bring the responsible individuals to justice must be taken. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the attacker fully experiences the power of the rule of law in Germany.

In a statement on X, Scholz described the incident as “horrific” and mentioned that the condition of some of the injured victims was severe. The attack occurred on Thursday when a 24-year-old Afghan refugee drove his car into pedestrians in Munich, injuring at least 28 people.

The Munich mayor, Dieter Reiter, reported to the German media outlets that some of the victims were children. The police have arrested the driver at the scene and are conducting a “large-scale operation” in the city. Authorities are calling the incident a “suspicious attack.”

It has been reported that the Afghan refugee had a criminal history, including charges of theft and drug offenses. The escalation of violent incidents involving Afghan refugees has raised significant concerns in Germany.

Chancellor Scholz’s statement reflects the increasing pressure on Germany to address the security challenges posed by certain asylum seekers.
