Tottenham Hotspur are a bigger club than Man City – Gary Neville insists
Tottenham Hotspur are a much bigger club than Manchester City, says Gary Neville – but he slams Daniel Levy for his poor on-pitch management of a “historic club.”
Drama, Pressure, and Redemption: Spurs’ Victory Over United
The buildup to Tottenham Hotspur’s clash against Manchester United was one for the history books, as it had a bit of everything.
With injured players returning, under pressure Ange Postecoglou was in desperate need of a victory after stating consistently that injuries to key players have played a role in his team’s downward spiral.
Roy Keane was also quick to rip into Maddison pre-match, stating that the Englishman is too inconsistent and that he rarely steps up to the plate.
The Fans’ frustration with club chairman Daniel Levy and ENIC reached its boiling point as Spurs fans came out in thousands to demand that the chairman “get out of our club”
Ultimately, it was the perfect night for the Lilywhites, as James Maddison silenced his critics after getting the winning goal, and manager Ange Postecoglou got a much-needed win to ease a bit of the pressure.
Gary Neville criticises under pressure Daniel Levy
However, while the on-field display was solid and sharp from the Tottenham Hotspur players, matters off the field continued to take precedence.
Club chairman Daniel Levy has been feeling the pressure from the fans and now Gary Neville has given his take on the issue.
The ex-Manchester United full-back praised Daniel Levy’s business acumen but stated that the chairman has neglected the footballing side of things, all to the detriment of the club in general.
He states that Tottenham Hotspur historically is a much bigger club than Manchester City, however, the footballing environment and a lack of ambition have led to the Lilywhites being left behind.
Gary Neville told Sky Sports Main Event (16/2/25 – 19:10) “At other clubs like City, United. You always felt you could get a player off top Tottenham, whereas actually he’s [Daniel Levy] has never created a position whereby, I think at this club now, with this stadium and the revenues that they have, whereby when you’re at Tottenham, you feel like, ‘No, you need to stay.’
“Where Manchester City, over the last ten to twelve, years in the Abu Dhabi ownership, they’ve created the culture whereby players want to stay because they’re winning. Now that needs to be created here, because Tottenham’s a bigger club in Manchester City.
“Let’s be really clear. That’s not controversial, by the way, when Manchester City were taken over by Abu Dhabi 15 years ago, Tottenham are far bigger football club.
“The idea that Tottenham historically have not been a bigger football club than Manchester City, absolutely. Now City where they are now currently sitting where they currently are, right at the top of the game, because they’ve invested in an amazing football project, they’ve been brilliant on and off the pitch.
“Daniel [Levy] did it brilliantly off the pitch. He’s not done it brilliantly on it so that’s why he’s behind Manchester City.
“Tottenham is a historic football club that is bigger than Manchester City. That’s not a start criticism of Manchester City. City have done incredibly well for an amazing football club in terms of their wins and everything like that, but Tottenham historically are a big club let’s be clear.”
Tottenham Hotspur board admit to transfer mistakes
While Tottenham Hotspur fans are of the opinion that there is a lack of investment in the club by its current ownership, Levy and Co think otherwise.
It was revealed earlier this week that the Tottenham board believe they have backed managers. Instead, they feel that they have made mistakes in transfer windows, and they are happy with some of the business they have done in the last 12 months.
