Iran and India strengthen bilateral ties with focus on Chabahar Port
Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, who is in Muscat to attend the eighth Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) conference, met with S. Jaishankar, India’s Foreign Minister. The two discussed various aspects of bilateral relations and regional cooperation.
According to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, February 16, Araghchi emphasized the importance of expanding comprehensive relations between Iran and India based on mutual interests. He also highlighted the significance of the successful 19th round of political consultations between the two countries held in New Delhi.
Araghchi addressed the challenges faced by both countries due to external interventions and reiterated the importance of their 10-year agreement on the Chabahar Port. Chabahar, located in the Indian Ocean, serves as a vital link between Iran and India, and both countries are committed to strengthening their cooperation in this area.
The foreign ministers of both Iran and India also discussed various aspects of their bilateral relations, including political, cultural, economic, and commercial ties. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues, particularly focusing on the situation in Afghanistan.
Jaishankar described the meeting with his Iranian counterpart as productive and positive on his official X account. He emphasized the need for continued consultations and close cooperation between India and Iran, underlining the importance of maintaining dialogue to address regional challenges.
The two ministers also discussed how to further enhance cooperation in trade and investment, particularly in sectors that benefit both nations. Given the geopolitical significance of their relationship, the discussions aimed at fostering deeper bilateral ties.
The meeting between Araghchi and Jaishankar demonstrates the shared commitment of Iran and India to advancing their strategic partnership. With the complexities of regional security, particularly in Afghanistan, both countries are focused on strengthening their diplomatic, economic, and security relations to ensure mutual benefits.
