Match Preview: Boston United (H)

0

It’s a quick turnaround for the Coasters who face Boston United on Tuesday night in the second of two back-to-back home games.

After facing Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday afternoon, it’s the second huge game for Kevin Phillips’ side against fellow strugglers Boston.

Fylde came from behind to earn a point against the Daggers on Saturday in a dominant Mill Farm display which saw Will Hugill claim his first Coasters goal.

Fylde are also looking for a league double over Boston after running out 2-1 winners over the Pilgrims in the reverse fixture back in October.

Goals from Adam Long and Corey Whelan completed the comeback in Lincolnshire in what proved to be Kevin Phillips’ first win in charge.

Opposition Dugout: Graham Coughlan

In the opposition dugout is former Irish defender Graham Coughlan.

The 50-year-old began his career in his native Ireland, starting out at Bray Wanderers. A move over to England followed in 1995 with Blackburn Rovers before he he really made a name for himself with Plymouth Argyle in the early 2000’s.

After later spells at Sheffield Wedneday and Shrewesbury Town, Coughlan finished his playing career in 2013 with Southend United.

The Dubliner moved into a coaching role with Bristol Rovers in 2018 as defensive coach before taking the reigns as Manager after impressive on a caretaker basis. In 2019, Coughlan kept Rovers from sinking into League Two, avoiding relegation on the penultimate day of the season.

In 2022, Coughlan became manager of Newport County, leading them to a 15th-placed finish in League Two as well as leading them to a FA Cup Fourth Round tie were they were narrowly defeated by Manchester United.

In November, Coughlan was appointed Manager of Boston United with the hope of pulling the Pilgrims away from the drop zone as they sat 23rd in the table.

One to watch: Jimmy Knowles

A well loved figure amongst the Boston faithful, Jimmy Knowles scored the winning goal in Boston’s play off final with Brackley Town which saw them promoted back to the National League.Following that goal, Knowles earned a permanent move to League Two side Accrington Stanley, but recently made the move back on loan to Lincolnshire to help steer the Pilgrims away from relegation troubles.

Knowles came through the academies at Nottingham Forest and Mansfield Town before turning professional with the Stags, making his debut against Stevenage in a 0-0 draw.

After being loaned out to the likes of Notts County and Greenock Morton, Knowles made the move to the Jakemans Community Stadium in 2023.
