Two of our Tigers are heading to LA!
The road to LA28 begins for two Tigers…
The start of February saw two of our Wheelchair Rugby members, Tyler Walker and Faye West, travel to Japan to represent Great Britain at the Japan Para Championships. The 4-team tournament put Great Britain up against Paralympic gold medalists, Japan, bronze medalists Australia, and France. This was the first international tournament of the four-year cycle leading up to Los Angeles 2028 and here’s what Faye had to say on the experience:
“I’d never been to Japan before so I was very excited. It was such a great experience and I loved every minute of it. It was great to get on court and work on the things we had practised and play against top teams.”
Great Britain finished third overall, however, the clear emphasis from the team was to develop the team and run different line-ups. Tyler and Faye both got lots of court time across the seven games, playing well overall and having significant contributions in the bronze medal match. Tyler commented on the team’s performance:
“The team did really well and as a new group, we learnt a lot and have put down a great foundation going into the new cycle” (for the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles).
Both players also pleased new GB Head Coach, Adam Scaturro, who had some praise for the pair – click here to read here what he said.
“My excitement about players like Faye West and Tyler Walker really speaks to the passion for GBWR supporting emerging talent. Watching them step up in a tournament like this, with opportunities to lead their lines, is such an exciting moment – not just for their development but also for the future of GB.”
Next up for Great Britain is the European Championships in April where Tyler and Faye hope to contribute further and help Great Britain to overcome reigning champions France to win gold.
