PCB cracks down on ICC Champions Trophy 2025 security breach, one arrest made

New Delhi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has implemented strict measures in response to a security incident during the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025. The PCB has acknowledged a significant security breach that took place during the match between New Zealand and Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, where a spectator managed to bypass security and tried to hug New Zealand player Rachin Ravindra on the field.

In reaction to this incident, the PCB announced that the person who invaded the pitch has been apprehended and appeared in court on Tuesday. Additionally, this individual has been prohibited from attending any cricket events in Pakistan.

This event has attracted significant attention, especially since Pakistan is hosting an ICC event for the first time in 29 years. A security breach occurred when a fan was able to evade security and access the playing area, leading to substantial criticism of the PCB.

“The PCB has taken serious note of the security breach that occurred yesterday when a spectator entered the field of play. Ensuring the safety of players and officials remains our top priority. As a responsible organisation, we have engaged with local security agencies, who have committed to increasing security personnel around the field of play at all venues and strengthening access control measures,” PCB said in an official statement.

“The individual involved was arrested and presented before a court of law today (Tuesday). In addition, he has been permanently banned from entering all cricket venues in Pakistan,” PCB’s statement further added.

In light of the recent security breach, the PCB has expressed its dedication to working closely with security agencies to enhance and improve current security measures. The board aims to establish protocols that will successfully avert similar incidents in the future. This joint initiative highlights the PCB’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of both players and fans at all cricket events in Pakistan.

“To prevent such incidents in the future, the PCB is working closely with security agencies and venue authorities to review and reinforce security protocols,” the statement added.

New Zealand’s five-wicket win over Bangladesh in Rawalpindi not only sealed their spot in the Champions Trophy semifinal but also India’s. The outcome of the match officially eliminated defending champions Pakistan and Bangladesh from the eight-team tournament.

With this outcome, India and New Zealand have emerged as the two teams advancing to the semi-finals from Group A. While India will play their semifinal match on March 4 while New Zealand will play their top four clash on March 5
