THOUSANDS of drivers face delays as a major road has been set to close for up to a whole month.

Works will begin in just days and could take up to four weeks with the busy city centre route shutting overnight.

Mancunian City Council has provided a handy map for those unsure whether the works will impact them[/caption]

Commuters and travellers headed for the Mancunian Way are likely to be impacted after the council announced their plans.

The elevated main road has been designated as a site for resurfacing works which begin on March 3.

Every year 15 million journeys are taken along the road which makes up part of the Manchester-Salford Inner Ring Roads.

Work will also take part on two separate sections of the highway meaning the eastbound carriageway will be started on first.

Then attention will turn to the westbound lane from Fairfield Street to Upper Brook Street.

For the eastbound section headed towards Ashton Old Road the carriageway will be closed between 7pm and 5am.

This changes for March 7, 10 and 14 due to major events taking place over these days.

Slightly later road closures have been put in place across this period.

No work has been scheduled across Saturday or Sunday nights too.

Following the completion of these works, a start will be made on the westbound carriageway.

Following the direction of Regent Road, the work will take place between March 17 and March 28.

This means no cars will be able to travel down the road from 7pm until 5am with the exception of March 19 due to an event.

On this occasion, the closures have been planned to start half an hour later.

Motorists have been advised to follow diversion signs and plan ahead.

Those unsure can head to the local authority’s website which has signposted the works on a map.

Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport said: “One of the big issues that people have raised with us is that many of our key roads are no longer at the standard they, or we, expect.

“This is why over the coming months the Council is working to get roads resurfaced as quickly as we can, delivering benefits for motorists and prioritising the needs of our residents.

“These works are taking place overnight to mitigate any potential disruption but as always, we would encourage people to plan their journeys ahead of time and allow more time to travel if they need to go via the Mancunian Way.”

It seems the works are part of Manchester city council’s wide-ranging programme of road improvements.

Announcing the works via its website, the council revealed they were focusing on the priorities of surveyed residents.

Being one of the most-used roads in the city, the necessary maintenance has been deemed “vital” to keep traffic flowing.
