Explosion kills two, injures one in Farah province, Afghanistan
Local authorities in Farah province reported that two people were killed and one injured as a result of an explosion in the Gholestan district. The explosion occurred on Tuesday morning, February 25, 2025, in the village of “Dehk” within a former foreign military base.
Details about the explosion and the identities of the victims have not been provided yet. The area is known for being one of Afghanistan’s most contaminated regions with unexploded ordnance and landmines left from past conflicts.
Afghanistan continues to be one of the most mine-affected countries in the world, with many casualties, including children, from unexploded devices. The ongoing presence of mines remains a significant safety hazard for the population.
Recently, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that Afghanistan is still one of the world’s most heavily contaminated countries with explosive remnants of war. This ongoing issue continues to threaten the lives of civilians.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), approximately 55 civilians are killed or injured each month in Afghanistan due to explosions from remnants of war. OCHA has called for $21.9 million in funding for mine clearance and awareness efforts in 2025.
Afghanistan remains heavily affected by unexploded landmines and ordnance. Around 3.3 million people in the country live within one kilometer of landmines and explosive materials, making the need for continued demining and education programs urgent.
