'A nightmare for Republicans' in Virginia over DOGE devastation: MSNBC guest

During an appearance on MSNBC on Friday morning, Dave Weigel of Semafor claimed that Republicans in Virginia are facing possible crushing losses at the ballot box this year courtesy of Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

While federal workers across the country are being forced out of their jobs by the indiscriminate, and possibly illegal, purge being conducted by the Donald Trump administration, Washington D.C. adjacent Virginia is taking the hardest hit.

Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Weigel followed up on a recent report where he suggested, "This year, it’s DOGE and the prospect of still more federal worker layoffs becoming a Democratic piñata," noting that what happens in Virginia's gubernatorial election this year will be a bellwether for the rest of the country.

Speaking with the MSNBC hosts, he claimed, "The marquee race in the first year of a presidency has been, for a while, the race for governor of Virginia, the race for the House of Delegates, attorney general, lieutenant governor in one of the worst places in the country to run on firing federal workers for various and overlapping reasons."

Pointing out that Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin's administration has implemented a hastily put-together website designed to help fired workers find new jobs, he added, "It was not very convincing to Democrats, not just against DOGE, but very confident in the state with 145,000 federal employees, with many more people whose businesses rely on federal workers coming to spend money at them, or family members benefiting from their spouses' salaries."

"This is this has been a nightmare for Republicans in Virginia and their answer has been, don't worry, you're going to find something else to do." he added.
