DOGE 'dealt a bit of a blow' — and may be in its 'very early ending': journalist
President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency could soon see itself collapse under the political pressure of mass firings and sweeping changes to the federal government its head Elon Musk has set off.
That’s according to White House economics reporter Jeffrey Stein, who told viewers during an appearance on CNN Thursday that Musk “seems to have been dealt a bit of a blow in the White House today.”
The comments came as Trump put his tech billionaire ally on notice – in front of cabinet members – that he did not single-handedly have the power to institute mass federal firings, which have triggered outrage at town halls nationwide and concern from lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
“There’s I think still very a good reason to believe that we're in the very early endings of DOGE,” Stein, of the Washington Post, said.

CNN’s John King said it was “quite obvious” why Trump decided to limit Musk’s powers before walking viewers through an analogy to illustrate his view.
“The laws of politics often track the laws of physics,” King said. “And in the laws of physics and politics, you have a wind at your back, you go that way, you advance your agenda, you say, ‘I have the force behind me, let's do what I want to do.’”
“When you have headwinds, you go backward,” he added. “You go that way, and that's what the president has right now. He's hearing it from members of Congress about Elon Musk. He’s hearing it from some of his own cabinet secretaries – that ‘he's coming into my department and messing with my business – and it's causing me problems’…so the president is hearing it.”
