Rubio: 83% of USAID programs terminated following six-week review
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that 83% of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) programs will be canceled following a six-week review.
Rubio stated on Monday, March 10 that 5,200 contracts have been terminated, involving billions of dollars in spending that, according to him, did not serve the national interests of the United States and, in some cases, even harmed them.
According to Rubio, the remaining 18% of USAID programs, which involve 1,000 contracts, will be carried out effectively under the supervision of the Department of State, in consultation with Congress. He emphasized that these programs will be restructured to better align with U.S. priorities.
Rubio also expressed gratitude to Elon Musk and the U.S. government efficiency team for their role in achieving these “historic reforms.” The Secretary of State acknowledged the efforts of government employees working to streamline operations and cut unnecessary spending.
USAID has long been one of the largest providers of foreign aid to impoverished countries, including Afghanistan. The agency plays a crucial role in global development assistance, supporting various programs aimed at alleviating poverty, promoting education, and improving health care worldwide.
This policy shift could significantly impact U.S. relations with countries that rely heavily on American development assistance, particularly in regions such as South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. While some argue that the cuts could lead to more efficient aid distribution, others worry that the reduction in foreign aid could damage the U.S.’s influence on global development and diplomatic relations.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the Trump administration sought to revoke the independence of USAID and take direct control over its operations. The move to reduce USAID’s scope is seen as part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to curtail foreign aid and refocus U.S. resources on domestic priorities.
