Passports will still be valid for travel after REAL ID deadline
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Starting May 7, you’ll need a REAL ID for domestic travel and to enter certain federal buildings.
If you can’t make the deadline, you’ll still be able to board flights using your passport, according to the TSA.
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is advising New Yorkers to get their REAL IDs sooner rather than later. DMV sites across New York will open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays for new REAL ID and Enhanced ID applicants to get their cards.
“The last thing you want to do is delay a trip, or worse, be unable to fly if you need to in a pinch because you don’t have the right identification,” DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder said.
After May 7, TSA will accept the following forms of identification to board flights:
- REAL ID
- Enhanced Driver’s License
- U.S. Passport
- U.S. passport card
- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
- Permanent resident card
- Border crossing card
- An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs).
- HSPD-12 PIV card
- Foreign government-issued passport
- Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
- Transportation worker identification credential
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
- U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
