'Get ready to drink Oregon pinot noir': Internet torches Trump for latest tariff 'tantrum'
President Donald Trump massively ramped up his trade war threats against the European Union on Thursday when he threatened to slap 200 percent tariffs on alcoholic products from the EU.
Trump then claimed that these tariffs would be a boon for the American "wine and champagne" industry despite the fact that champagne is only made in a particular region of France.
This amused CNBC's Carl Quintanilla, who wrote on BlueSky that there is no such thing as a "champagne business in the US."
The Washington Post's Catherine Rampell made a similar point while mocking Trump's latest proposal.
"Does this mean we are also annexing the Champagne region of France now?" she wondered. "That’s the only way we will have American champagne businesses."

AFP White House correspondent Danny Kemp, meanwhile, wrote on X that the announcement means Americans should "get ready to drink more Oregon pinot noir."
Law professor Anthony Michael Kreis mused about ways to get around the latest Trump tariffs.
"If Trump imposes a 200% tariff, I'll run a smuggling operation for black market champagne next week that'll make Dunkirk look like child's play," he wrote.
Other Trump critics pointed out the potential conflict of interest the new tariffs present given that Trump himself owns a winery.
"A reminder that Donald Trump himself owns a domestic winery. Although— I’ve heard the stuff is undrinkable," wrote Aaron Fritschner, a former staffer for Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA).
Economic analyst Joey Politano, however, simply lamented that Trump can't help ramping up trade wars with American allies.
"Every day I wake up and there’s more tariffs," he wrote.
Numerous internet users referred to the new threat as a "tantrum," including at least one self-identified political scientist on X.
