Niskayuna teacher under investigation after alleged 'disconcerting' comments

NISKAYUNA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A Niskayuna High School teacher is reportedly under investigation by officials following alleged "disconcerting" comments they made at a public event, the Niskayuna Central School District announced in a letter to parents over the weekend. The teacher has not been identified by the district.

On March 9, the teacher allegedly organized a public event at the Niskayuna Town Hall gazebo, where they made "disconcerting statements," Niskayuna Superintendent Carl Mummenthey reported in the letter. Both the school district and local law enforcement are reportedly investigating the comments.

"Our district is now investigating the public statements the teacher made during the March 9 event," Mummenthey said. "We were not aware of this information prior to the March 9 event."

Days prior to the incident, on March 6, the teacher was put on leave from their teaching duties at the school, according to the letter. The school district declined to comment on why the individual had been placed on leave, but they did state that substitute teachers were assigned to the teacher's classes to continue instruction.

"Our district does not release details regarding the discipline of any individual staff member," Mummenthey stated, stressing that the district is committed to maintaining a safe environment for students. "We promptly investigate all allegations of professional misconduct and take all corrective actions permitted by law if misconduct is confirmed."

The letter also explained that all candidates of employment at Niskayuna undergo a "rigorous review process," including interviews, verification of past employment, reference checks and a criminal history background check. All of these measures are also required by New York State Education Department regulations, according to the district.

School counselors and social workers are available at the high school for any students who may be struggling. School staff are also encouraged to contact their principal or supervisor for resources.

"The safety and security of our students and staff is always our highest priority at Niskayuna," the letter said. "We remain deeply committed to ensuring that all of our Niskayuna schools are safe, supportive environments where children can learn, grow and thrive."
