American Citizen released from Taliban prison
An American citizen has been released from Taliban custody after two years of detention.
Following the visit of the American delegation to Kabul, Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. special representative for Afghanistan, announced that Georg Glezmann, an American citizen, was freed after two years of Taliban detention. Khalilzad stated that the Taliban agreed to release Goldsman as a “gesture of goodwill” towards Donald Trump and the people of the United States.
Khalilzad wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Today is a good day. We succeeded in obtaining the release of an American citizen, Georg Glezmann, after two years in detention in Kabul. The Taliban government agreed to free him as a goodwill gesture to @POTUS and the American people. George is on his way home to his family.”
However, there is no information available about the fate of Mahmood Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American citizen who remains in Taliban custody.
The U.S. Department of State has confirmed Glezmann’s release and mentioned that American citizens are still in detention in Afghanistan. The department did not provide any details regarding the status or fate of Mr. Habibi.
During their trip to Kabul, Zalmay Khalilzad and Adam Boler, the U.S. special envoy for hostages, met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister, to discuss prisoner releases.
Khalilzad emphasized that U.S. President Donald Trump had prioritized the release and return of detained Americans from abroad. He expressed pride in playing a role in this effort.
The U.S. Department of State has called George Glezmann’s release a positive and constructive step, noting that his freedom was secured with the mediation of Qatar.
The successful release of George Glezmann reflects the ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the complex issue of American citizens held in Afghanistan. While this marks a positive development, the situation of other detainees like Mahmood Shah Habibi remains uncertain.
The U.S. government continues to work towards securing the release of its citizens and ensuring their safe return home, highlighting the importance of international cooperation and mediation in resolving such humanitarian issues.
