Adolescence’s Stephen Graham reveals if hit Netflix drama will return after smashing records and worldwide success
ADOLESCENCE creator Stephen Graham has opened up on the show’s future after becoming a worldwide smash and dominating the Netflix charts.
The four-part limited series, co-starring Top Boy‘s Ashley Walters, became a surprise hit for the streaming giant when it launched earlier this month.
It delivered some of Netflix‘s biggest viewing figures ever both in the UK and abroad.
Now, Stephen had admitted that there is the possibility of working with Netflix on a second one.
The Sun already told how bosses at the streamer were desperate to tie down on another series of the show.
In a new interview with Variety, Stephen appeared to hint it was happening as he joked it was all about the “figures” – essentially suggesting a no-brainer, based on the fact it has become Netflix’s biggest ever British production.
He told the publication: “Possibly [they’ll be a second], let’s see how the figures are.
“But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.”
Stephen was joined by wife and co-star Hannah Walters for the interview in which she admitted she would work with Netflix “all day long” in another major hint that someone new is in the works.
However, one thing that she did rule out was a prequel.
Hannah said: “A prequel to Adolescence, that’s certainly not going to happen.
“But there’s so much mileage in the one-shot and so much mileage in investing into human nature again and looking at something else.
“But yeah, everything’s looking good … everyone’s happy, shall we say?”
She also suggested the pair were hoping to land a first-look deal with Netflix to produce more content for them in a similar vein to Richard Gadd after the success of his show, Baby Reindeer.
Hannah said of their company Matriach signing a deal with Netflix: “When they want to have that conversation, my door is open.
“That’s organically the way that you think it’s going to go, but we’ll see.”
Whilst fans may not have actually realised it, Hannah did in fact appear in the show in episode two.
In a blink and you’ll miss it moment, she took on the role of Mrs Bailey, a teacher who could be seen reprimanding pupil Jade after they hit another pupil.
Adolescence explores the story of the fictional Miller family, whose lives are turned upside down when their 13-year-old-son Jamie is arrested on suspicion of murder having been radicalised online.
It reached 24.3million views in its first four days and been hailed the most important show of the year.
A TV source previously told The Sun of its future: “Execs are thrilled by the results and acclaim for Adolescence.
“It’s seen as a format that can run and run, at least to a second series if not further, as it could take in a different teen issue each series.
“The topic has resonated with viewers because it taps into parents biggest fear and there’s plenty of scope for more in the same vein.
“Stylistically, the one-take creative approach could become the hallmark of the series. It’s one of the aspects which has got everyone talking.”
