Malibu is getting a $4.1 million skate park offering stairs, rails, ledges and banks
The City of Malibu has worked since 2019 to create a top-notch skatepark as part of the city’s goal of “providing high-quality recreational facilities and fostering an active, health community.” The famous city on the beach, which saw tragedy from the devastating wildfires in January, says the $4.1 million skate park is more than a recreational facility.
Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart said in a recent prepared statement, “It will be a gathering place that will foster community, promote healthy lifestyles, and embrace Malibu’s deep-rooted skate culture. … We look forward to watching generations of skaters enjoy this incredible new space.”
The groundbreaking ceremony for the 12,500 square-foot skatepark was held on April 11, and the hope is that the skatepark will be completed and opened in the fall. The city’s temporary Malibu skatepark, which opened in 2020 at 24250 Pacific Coast Highway adjacent to the Malibu Bluffs Park, will stay open during construction of the new skatepark.
The skatepark, designed by California Skateparks, will offer skill levels from beginners to experts, and will offer ledges, banks, stairs, rails, quarter-pipes and more. Equally important to some, the city still has to choose a name for the new park.
