BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Buffalo Boat Tours is setting sail for its 16th season at Canalside. With this weekend's sunny weather, it's a perfect time for the family-operated business to train its crew on how to have a fun and safe spring and summer.
"The excitement is actually through the roof, because the weather and the cold all winter long has got everybody in a frenzy," said Rich Hilliman, the owner and operator of Buffalo Boat Tours. "The crew's excited and the captains are excited."
On Saturday, crews were getting trained for the upcoming season, including how to safely tie the boats to the dock and what to do in the event someone falls overboard. Hilliman said that has yet to happen, but they want to be prepared just in case.
"We want to operate a very safe environment here on the water. There's always weather and things that could happen, so we need to pay attention to a lot of things," Hilliman said. "So if something were to go wrong, what could it be, and how do we react?"
Buffalo Boat Tours, which has been in operation since 2009, has four vessels: the Tiki boat, the Spirit of Buffalo, the Harbor Queen, and a bike ferry. Each boat offers locals and visitors a unique experience of the Queen City and what its waterfront has to offer.
"As opposed to just the Buffalo Bills and the snow, which I love both ... but there's more to it than that," Hilliman said. "We're starting to be known for our waterfront."
