Subway Grew Despite Closing Over 600 Restaurants Domestically
While many Subway locations have closed across the U.S., the company continues to expand globally. According to QSR Magazine, Subway has opened more than 1,000 new locations across the globe and has experienced "its second straight year of positive global net restaurant growth."
The outlet reported that a large portion of the "growth comes from its intense international strategy. Over the past three and a half years, the brand has signed 25 master franchise agreements, which together represent commitments for more than 10,000 future restaurant openings. Seven of those agreements were inked in 2024 alone, bringing Subway into new markets like Paraguay and Mongolia."
Subway customers may have noticed several strategic decisions that likely contributed to the company’s growth. First off, "strategic site selection" has contributed to what the company calls "smart" growth.
In addition, the sandwich giant recently launched its 'Fresh Forward 2.0' campaign, aimed at revamping both its appearance and operational efficiency.
In a press release from November 2024, Subway described the campaign's fresh new image and attempt to improve the guest experience.
In the release, Mike Kehoe, Global Chief Development Officer of Subway, shared, "When Subway first launched Fresh Forward, it was more than just a remodel—it was a complete refresh and a competitive necessity for attracting guests and building pride among our restaurant teams. Fresh Forward 2.0 is an exciting evolution of the design, ensuring we continue to future proof our business and deliver on our brand promises of experience and convenience for both our guests and franchisees."
The store's new design includes self-serve kiosks that have been met with "overwhelmingly positive feedback from guests." Today, there are over 37,000 Subway shops in over 100 countries worldwide.
