NBC Execs Explain Decision to Axe Reboot of Popular Series After One Season
NBC execs are sounding off on their decision to cancel Suits L.A. after one season.
According to Variety, Jeff Bader, the president of program planning strategy at NBCUniversal Entertainment, stated the performance of Suits L.A. factored in to its cancellation.
“We had to look at the performance of the shows, both on linear and on digital. We had to see the ones that looked like they had growth potential in the future. So we’re looking at how stable they are on their linear performance, how stable they are on digital, which ones are growing and which ones are declining. And we had to make some hard decisions.”
A reboot of the acclaimed USA legal drama, Suits L.A. debuted with a new storyline centered around a new group of attorneys, with Stephen Amell starring as entertainment lawyer Ted.
Bader further explained that shows that had the ability to capture a new audience factored in to whether they were renewed or cancelled.
“We looked at what their performance was week-to-week, episode-to-episode, on both linear and digital, to just try and glean which ones we thought had the best ratings story,” Bader said. “And then on the creative side, the creative teams did the same thing. Which ones have the most potential, or the best potential, to capture a new audience?”
Suits L.A also starred Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, Bryan Greenberg, Troy Winbush, Rachelle Goulding, Azita Ghanizada, Maggie Grace, and Alice Lee also starred on the series. Matt Letscher, Sofia Pernas and Maggie Grace recur. Guest stars included John Amos, in his final role, Victoria Justice, Patton Oswalt, Yvette Nicole Brown, Brian Baumgartner, and Enrico Colantoni.
Created and executive produced by Aaron Korsh, Suits L.A. will wrap its run after the season finale.
