Madonna’s Scrapped Biopic Is Getting Another Chance & the Material Girl Is Already on Board
In 2022, fans of Madonna were getting excited about the prospect of having a biopic not only about the Material Girl, but directed by her, too. But while casting announcements had already been made, the project was scrapped by early 2023. Now, however, the biopic is getting another chance.
On May 12, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Madonna was officially teaming up with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy for a limited series about her life and career on Netflix. Per the outlet, Levy’s company, 21 Laps Entertainment, has a deal with Madonna, but no other writers, producers and actors have been tied to the project just yet.
If the limited series is anything like the series, however, we’re guessing the “Like a Virgin” singer will be heavily involved. For that project, Madonna was going to direct and had been a part of writing two drafts of a script with Oscar winner Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson.
As for other details of the project, the casting process in 2022 was highly publicized with stars like Florence Pugh, Euphoria star Alexa Demie Australian actress Odessa Young throwing their hat in the ring for the role. Inventing Anna star Julia Garner ended up being selected.
Before filming began, sadly, the movie was scrapped at Universal Pictures. Per Variety, speculation over the movie no longer happening started after Madonna announced her international music tour, “The Celebration Tour,” on January 17, 2023.
Later that year, on December 14, 2023, Madonna even invited Garner on stage to help her in a dance number on tour. Movie or not, it seemed like those two really bonded!
Previously, Madonna directed the short movie Secret Project Revelation and feature films Filth and Wisdom (2008) and W.E. (2011). Could her fourth directorial project be in the making?
