The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works Albert Mavhunga is meeting Bulawayo City Council officials and the Environmental Management Agency to address the Richmond Landfill Site fires.
Speaking during the meeting, the Deputy Minister said the Government is concerned with the fires as it is putting the lives of residents in Cowdray Park at risk and must be addressed once and for all.
Bulawayo City Council Cleansing Officer, Mr Nkanyiso Ndlovu said they hope to have addressed the latest fire break by 6pm today.
The meeting with the Deputy Minister follows a fire that broke out at the landfill site last week, with the local authority by then saying it will take seven days to put out.
The fire resulted in an increase in fumes, which over the years have become a problem for residents in these suburbs amid reports that some are contracting respiratory diseases from inhaling smoke emanating from waste at the landfill site.
According to residents, the fire broke out last Friday, with residents taking to social media, calling on the Bulawayo City Council to urgently intervene to solve the crisis.
