On a recent episode of his Kaun Banega Crorepati game show, Amitabh Bachchan recalled a decades old incident when he and Ratan Tata shared a flight to London. Upon their arrival at London’s Heathrow Airport, Ratan Tata couldn’t find his aides, and needed to make a phone call to locate them.

Tata headed to a nearby phone booth (mobile phones weren’t a thing back then), but released he didn’t have any cash to place a phone call.

“He went into a phone booth, and I was nearby. A little later, he came out, walked up to me, and I still can’t believe he said this.`Amitabh, can I borrow some money from you? I don’t have any money on me to make a phone call.’ Bachchan recounted while narrating the incident alongside filmmaker Farah Khan and actor Boman Irani.

Akin to countless others who’ve had the privilege of Ratan Tata’s acquaintance, Amitabh hailed the beloved industrialist for this otherworldly humility and simplicity.

When Ratan Tata’s asked Amitabh’s friend for a ride home

In another tale narrated by Bachchan Sr., the Bollywood legend recalled how Ratan Tata once asked a friend of the actor to drop him home, after he and Tata had attended a social event.

“Can you drop me home? I just live behind your house,” Tata asked Bachchan’s friend, who was stunned by the industrialist’s humble request.

Later, the unnamed friend had told Amitabh how he was astonished when a person of Ratan Tata’s stature casually asked him for a ride home, saying he did not have a car with him on that evening.

It has been more than six months since the passing away of revered and very much loved industrialist Ratan Tata, but his name and his stories still bring smiles on faces.
