Madrid Apartment
Set within an historic 1900 building in Madrid’s Chamberí district, this 950-square-foot apartment was brought into the 21st century by the design partnership of local Woodward & Co and Studio Egeo. The overall ambition of the project was to imbue an airy lightness into the dated interior through subtle but impactful design moves.
A neutral, earthen palette contributes to the warmth of the space, achieved through rich wood cabinetry and flooring, raw plaster walls and ceilings, and a sculptural stone island. Composed of three monolithic pieces of stone, the island can be used to support cooking, dining, and the clients’ passion for DJ’ing. In fact, the kitchen was designed to conceal completely behind custom cabinetry whenever the home switches into entertaining mode.
This functional center opens to the living space, which combines symmetry and minimalism to create a simple yet impactful space. A modular sofa by Mario Bellini sits before a 20th-century steel and brass Maison Charles coffee table. The plush seating is flanked by white plinths, supporting a pair of snarling lion’s head sculptures. Overhead hangs PEYIA, a mixed-media work on canvas by Spanish artist, Enrich Ramón.
The careful curation continues into the bedroom, where an oil-painted screen of Belgian origin occupies much of the back wall. Used as a headboard for the room’s low-slung, monastic king bed, the 19th-century wood and leather folding piece depicts a bucolic landscape of winding hills, trees, farm animals, and people. Vertical tube pendants suspend over matching warm wood side tables. Opposite, a mirrored wardrobe expands the feel of the space.
The design takes inspiration from the interiors of Belgian architect Nicolas Schuybroek and French designer Martín Brulé. Masters of layering and curation, the influence of their work can be felt in the Madrid Apartment’s thoughtful combination of modern and antique. The result is a space respectful of its historic roots yet poised for contemporary life.
