Bulawayo requires over 500 bins

THE City of Bulawayo requires over 500 bins to aid in its solid waste collection endeavours in the city.

This was revealed by the city’s mayor, Councillor David Coltart, on Thursday, while receiving a donation of eight bins from the Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Organisation (BVTO).

Speaking at the handover, Clr Coltart said the gesture was an important example of collaboration between the local authority and residents.

“As you know, one of our primary goals as a city is to transform it, to clean it up, to make it an attractive city for residents but also potential investors. We recognise that if our city appears disorganised, the intention to attract investors into the city will be undermined because no investor will come to a city that is chaotic, disorganised and dirty,” Cllr Coltart said.

He commended the council’s cleansing department for working hard, even with limited resources and acknowledged partnerships with residents and vendors being key to achieving a clean city.

“This gift is more than just these bins. It is an indication of your goodwill, your intention to work closely with the city as we seek to restore order,” he said.

Cllr Coltart said he is looking forward to collaboration with every organisation to navigate through the city’s goals.

“Our ultimate goal is that Fifth Avenue will be reverted to the formal sector, and that we will create specific, attractive venues in the city where vendors can operate with dignity, lawfully, and in an attractive environment for both themselves and their customers,” he said.

He said the city was in need of a minimum of 576 bins and welcomed partnerships to help close the gap.

The vice president of BVTO, Mrs Julius Samson, said the donation was a way for informal traders to play their part in keeping Bulawayo clean through a donation of marked bins.

“ We marked the bins to reduce work on those who do cleaning, and also to make it easier for waste pickers and recyclers to determine what is in the bin, the donation shows our commitment in contributing towards the cleanliness of the city,” Mrs Samson said.
