Red Sox’s Sweep Over AL East Foe Concludes Historic Road Trip
The Boston Red Sox didn’t need home cooking to dominate their American League East adversaries.
After taking three of four games at Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox swept the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. They finished the fruitful road trip with a 3-2 victory on Thursday.
Before Steven Matz cemented the win with his first save as a Red Sox, MLB.com’s Ian Browne noted the historical significance of Boston’s road success. By going 7-1 away from Fenway Park, the Red Sox won seven games on a road stand of eight games or fewer for the first time.
It wasn’t easy, as Boston squeaked out three one-run victories at Baltimore.
Jhostynxon Garcia recorded his first career hit on Thursday, and Rob Refsnyder went yard in his first action off the injured list. The game remained tied at 2-2 following six more strong frames from Garrett Crochet before Romy Gonzalez drove in Roman Anthony with the game-winning RBI single in the eighth.
With Aroldis Chapman receiving a rest day, Jordan Hicks, Garrett Whitlock and Matz each pitched a scoreless inning from the bullpen.
Hostile venues didn’t slow down the Red Sox over the past week, but they haven’t feasted on the road all season. Boston improved to 34-35 on the road following the strong trip.
That’s not a unique shortcoming, as no AL team has more than 34 away victories this season. Only the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros (each 34-32) have a winning road record in 2025.
Fortunately, this dominant stretch increases Boston’s chances of opening the playoffs at home as the AL’s top wild-card seed. The Red Sox return to Fenway Park for a pair of three-game sets against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Guardians.
