BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Demolition is set to begin to make way for a major redevelopment project on Fillmore Avenue in Tonawanda, city mayor John White said Tuesday.

The future site of "The Elli," a a mixed-use development that will include just under 125 apartments as well as commercial spaces on the waterfront along the Ellicott Creek and Erie Canal. Construction is set to begin in the spring.

The project is a part of a $10 million state grant given to the city in an effort to do multiple projects in Tonawanda. The development of the new building is set to use $3.4 million worth of those funds for a total project cost of $35 million.

The current land at 20-40 Fillmore has been vacant for more than two decades and is considered a nuisance in the city. The building was condemned and fenced off.

"This project is a big project for us here in the City of Tonawanda," White said. "The city is bursting with projects."

Construction is expected to last approximately 18 months.
