Shreyas Iyer shares recovery update after spleen injury, says ‘getting better every day…’
Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has given fans reason to smile with a hopeful message about his recovery. The 29-year-old cricketer, who sustained a severe rib injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney, shared that he is recovering well after a difficult few days in the ICU. Iyer had suffered internal bleeding due to a spleen laceration but expressed gratitude to supporters for their constant encouragement, assuring everyone that his rehabilitation is on track and he’s feeling stronger each day.
Sharing an update on X, Iyer wrote, “I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts.”
The unfortunate incident occurred when Iyer dived forward in an attempt to take a tough running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s delivery. Although he was able to leave the field with the physio’s help, his condition deteriorated shortly afterward as his vital signs declined, necessitating urgent medical attention. Further examinations confirmed internal bleeding caused by a spleen laceration, and he was subsequently moved to the ICU for intensive observation and treatment.
In an official update, the BCCI announced that Shreyas Iyer’s condition has stabilized. “The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress.”
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, speaking on the eve of the series opener against Australia in Canberra, said the team was relieved to know that Iyer was recovering well. “Now see, we are not doctors. When we saw from outside, when the catch was taken (by Shreyas), it looked like it was normal,” Suryakumar said. “But none of us were there, only those who were there can tell what actually happened. So they said after going inside it was felt you will have to pay good attention (to him). Then he was rushed to the specialist, and we were told about what happened.”
“After that we talked to him, when he was talking normally, we felt that it is a little better now, because doctors and physios told us that it was an unfortunate incident, which happens rarely. But sometimes rare incidents happen to rare talent.”
