How we photographed a Gregory Bovino federal hearing in downtown Chicago

This week’s top photo comes from Visual Journalist Anthony Vazquez. Follow him on Instagram.

What makes this photo important?

The photo shows U.S. Border Patrol Commander-at-large Gregory Bovino inside his U.S. Customs and Border Protection vehicle as he departs the Dirksen Federal Courthouse in Chicago. Bovino had just attended a hearing to answer allegations of excessive use of force, including tear gas, pepper balls and rubber bullets, by his federal agents during immigration enforcement operations in the Chicago area. In this moment, he was sitting in his vehicle, surrounded by a mass of media and protesters. It's an image of federal authority facing public and judicial scrutiny.

How did you get the photo?

Bovino was escorted by a big crew of federal agents, and the majority of journalists were waiting on the wrong side of the courthouse. When we all realized the move, it was a dead sprint to the north side of the building. By the time I got there, he was already in his car, waving. It was pure chaos—TV crews, protesters and photographers all fighting for space. I had to squeeze my way in, pressing right up against the car door, with arms and cameras extended everywhere. I couldn't even see through the viewfinder; I was just holding the camera up and hoping I'd get a good photo before he drove off. It wasn't until later that I realized I got this specific, clear photo through the window that reflected the scrum of people all angling to get a picture.
