“I’m glad the world has finally woken up to what we’ve all known for years, and I could not be more proud and happy for Johnny. I love him dearly, and he is more than deserving of this title. It’s long overdue,” Matt told THR. “The fact that he’s the first from the LGBTQ community makes it that much more impactful.”
“Part of me feels like I can’t believe it’s taken until 2025, but I’m just grateful that we’re here today,” the actor continued. “I think you have to put that aside and then say, hey, progress is progress, and this is phenomenal. And I’m glad that Johnny was the guy. He’s the perfect person to hold the mantle.”
In other exciting news, Matt was recently announced to be reuniting with Fellow Travelers producer Robbie Rogers for a new Hulu YA drama pilot.
According to Deadline, Matt will lead the cast of Foster Dade, which is based on Nash Jenkins’ debut novel “Foster Dade Explores the Cosmos.”
The series takes place across two timelines – 2008 and present day – and is “described as a sophisticated mystery set at an East Coast boarding school that explores privilege, scandal, sexuality and masculinity amid the rise of social media, millennial anxiety and pharmaceuticals.”
Foster Dade will revolved around Foster Dade, “a new transfer student at the elite Kennedy boarding school,” with Matt playing Alex Tierney, “the kind of literature teacher who makes you believe books can change your life — brilliant, eccentric, and ‘swoony,’ as the kids call him. He can spot depth of soul in his students from a mile away and pulls it out of them, sometimes ruthlessly. His intensity draws people in, blurring the line between mentorship and intimacy — which lands him in the thick of the Foster Dade scandal.”
Chloe East was also recently announced as the female lead Annabeth, who is “a popular girl at Kennedy who takes Foster under her wing.”
This will mark Matt‘s return to Hulu following the cancelation of his comedy Mid-Century Modern earlier this fall.
