Sunnyvale awarded $1.1M grant for clean energy initiatives
Clean energy grant
Sunnyvale recently received a $1.1 million grant from Silicon Valley Clean Energy to advance several local clean energy initiatives.
The grant funds will be used to install solar panels and battery storage at Sunnyvale Fire Station 2; expand the Sunnyvale Public Library’s Library of Things to include all-electric items; and support community outreach and education about clean energy.
This funding helps Sunnyvale reduce emissions from buildings and move closer to its climate action goals.
Protecting the shoreline
Santa Clara County, in partnership with the City of Sunnyvale and other local agencies, secured a $2.6 million state grant to develop a regional shoreline adaptation plan to address rising sea levels.
The plan will help the county assess local flood risks, identify effective strategies to protect communities and the shoreline and develop funding approaches to implement these solutions.
This project helps Sunnyvale meet state law SB 272, which requires coastal cities to complete shoreline adaptation plans by 2034, and supports the city’s Climate Action Playbook Strategy.
Stories from students
Silicon Valley students with a passion for protecting the environment are invited to write an article alongside city staff for the Sustainable Sunnyvale Newsletter. Student writers should aim to empower the community to take sustainable action by sharing their interests or accomplishments with over 3,000 newsletter subscribers.
Previously published student-led articles span a variety of topics, including developing walking and biking student-led initiatives; leaning on the environmentally active side of social media for allyship; and finding healing through nature and gardening.
