Cardinals All-Star Seen As Trade Chip; Red Sox Could Pursue

Former Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom is now in charge of the St. Louis Cardinals’ baseball operations, and he’s looking to make a ton of trades this offseason. According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan is among the players being shopped by Bloom, which has plenty of teams interested.

“Donovan is garnering widespread interest from exactly the teams that you would hope to be getting interest from: the Dodgers, the Mets, the Yankees. He could be some insurance … if the Phillies don’t re-sign Kyle Schwarber.”

Morosi grouped Donovan with Steven Kwan as two lefty bats expected to be moved this offseason, but he said that Donovan is the more likely to go.

Interestingly, Morosi also brought up Kyle Tucker for the sake of pointing out that a guy like Donovan gives you a valuable lefty bat for a whole lot cheaper than Tucker. Donovan also gives you more defensive versatility than Tucker, as he can play multiple infield positions.

Donovan hit .287/ .353/ .422/ .775 in 2025 (118 games played) while picking up his first All-Star berth along the way. At 28 years old, he’s in the prime of his career and could be entering the best phase of his career production.

MassLive’s Red Sox writer Sean McAdam recently suggested that Donovan could make sense for Boston. The idea there would be to monitor the Donovan sweepstakes in the event that the Red Sox fail to re-sign Alex Bregman or come up short in pursuit of another big bat, perhaps Pete Alonso.

Plenty of Red Sox supporters are hoping that Boston goes out and gets multiple bats this winter. Could that mean a combo like Bregman and Donovan? Time will tell, but keep in mind that the Red Sox already have Trevor Story locked in at shortstop and Marcelo Mayer expected to play everyday at either second or third base, depending on what happens with Bregman’s free agency.
