British grandad in ‘complete shock’ after winning £10,000 a month on third National Lottery attempt

A lucky Brit has scooped a life-changing National Lottery prize on just his third attempt – meaning he can finally spend quality time with his family. 

The £10,000-a-month jackpot means the Norwich grandfather can work less and ‘spoil his grandchild rotten’. 

He opted for a change of strategy when he bought a Set for Life entry at a local store, relying on his own numbers rather than a Lucky Dip selection.

The father-of-two, who will receive the payment every month for a year, said winning the famous prize was ‘surreal’.

He said: ‘I woke up to check the ticket the day after I won, just to double check I wasn’t dreaming.’ 

Andy Carter, senior winners’ advisor at Allwyn, which operates the National Lottery, hailed the win’s good timing.

He said: ‘What a fantastic story, and great timing for our new grandparent, who I bet can’t wait to spoil his new grandchild rotten, and what’s more, he’s earned his reduced working hours and the chance to spend more time with the family.’

Lottery wins across the country

The man from Norwich wasn’t the only person to strike gold.

A sign-making business owner from Exeter became a millionaire after picking a scratch card at random from his neighbourhood shop.

In August last year, a Glaswegian mum-of-four was stunned when she too won the £10,000-a-month Set for Life prize.

Olivia Love, 36, has quit her supermarket job and is pursuing her dream career as wedding content creator.

She said: ‘I’m not used to having any money. I’m used to having literal pennies left in the bank. I feel less anxious because I don’t have to worry about the bills.

‘I still feel a bit nauseous if I’m being honest about it especially when I think about how much money it is.

‘Suddenly having thousands blows my mind.’

Olivia can be excused for feeling nervous given winning the lottery isn’t always the ticket to happiness that people expect. 

History has countless examples of winners whose lives took a turn for the worse after scooping a large sum of money.

Some studies suggest lottery winners in the US are more likely to declare bankruptcy within three to five years compared to the average citizen.

There is a host of a unclaimed National Lottery prizes, including a £10 million winning ticket purchased in November in Bexley, London.

Time is running out for the mystery winner, who has until April to come forward.

Six tickets worth over £14 million have gone unclaimed since August last year and you can check the list here.

Last night’s £36 million EuroMillions jackpot rolls over to Friday after no winner was announced.

However, one person did win £140,047.40 after matching the five main numbers but with no lucky stars.
