40% of Women Have Grief After Abortions Even 20 Years Later

0

A new peer-reviewed study found the majority of women who’ve had an abortion experience just as much, if not more, grief as women who experience a natural loss.

The study surveyed almost 2,000 American women aged 41 to 45 years regarding grief disorder in both induced abortions (grouped by decision types: wanted, inconsistent, unwanted, and coerced) and natural losses. The survey revealed that high levels of grief across all studied groups and that substantial portions reported symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), a clinical diagnosis.

Key points:

  • Among women who had abortions, 70% reported them as inconsistent, unwanted, or coerced and showed significantly higher average grief scores compared to those who had wanted abortions.
    • Their levels of grief were similar to, and sometimes greater than, that reported for natural losses.
  • Almost 54% of women with coerced abortions faced the highest risk of PGD.
  • Nearly 40% of the women reported that the worst of their negative feelings persist an average of 20 years after their loss.
