In a surprise twist, Pruneyard Cinemas announces it’s staying open

0

Well done, movie fans: Pruneyard Cinemas is staying open.

In a twist worthy of an M. Night Shyamalan movie, the Campbell dine-in movie theater announced Friday afternoon that it was staying open, after previously announcing on Jan. 7 that both it and the Cedar Room lounge would close Jan. 25.

The theater’s managing partners declined to comment on the sudden change of fortune, but an email credited public enthusiasm and support through emails, phone calls, social media and press coverage.

“Your enthusiasm and encouragement were instrumental in helping us reach an agreement with Regency Centers, allowing us to continue serving our beloved community of Campbell and the South Bay,” the email read.

Pruneyard Cinemas, represented by San Jose firm Hoge Fenton, had filed a lawsuit against the Florida-based landlord in December, claiming Regency Centers’ refusal to adjust its rent was a contract violation. The status of the lawsuit is unclear.

But it sounds like Pruneyard, which opened in 2018, will attempt to bring in more revenue by continuing to diversify its offerings, with more live music, magic and comedy shows and private theater rentals in addition to popular programs like the Culinary Cinema series.
