Wayne Rooney left ‘buzzing’ after what Man United players did vs Man City
Manchester United delivered a magnificent performance to beat Manchester City 2-0 in the Premier League today.
Old Trafford was in full voice, roaring its approval as United outworked, outthought and outplayed their local rivals.
Second-half strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu crowned a dominant display and sealed a statement derby victory.
Club legend Wayne Rooney was quick to heap praise on the players after the final whistle.
He said (via BBC Sport): “I think the team spirit, the work rate, the energy, everything about that team was fantastic today.
“I’m absolutely buzzing for the players, for the fans – the fans have been starved of that over the last few years. I know it’s only one performance but I think everyone could see how exciting that team can be.
“The work rate, the shape, the organisation of Manchester United today, the desire to get back and double up and help your teammates out and tackle and run without the ball, as quickly backwards and you do forwards. I think that was really evident today.”
Special performance from United
Rooney is spot on with his comments as United played like a cohesive, disciplined unit against their fiercest rivals.
The stakes were enormous, with United entering the derby as clear underdogs.
Despite having only a handful of training sessions to implement his ideas, Michael Carrick produced a tactical masterclass.
City were restricted to just one shot on target, while United registered seven.
The Blues lacked creativity in the final third despite having players like Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.
Patrick Dorgu was outstanding, sharing the defensive workload with Luke Shaw while constantly offering a dangerous outlet down the left.
Bruno Fernandes was simply sublime, playing with courage, imagination and relentless creativity throughout.
Rooney is delighted with his performance and so will every United supporter.
Hopefully, Carrick and his players could deliver again next week against the Gunners.
