A Florida man was charged with first-degree murder with a firearm and attempted first-degree murder with a firearm after allegedly fatally shooting his former girlfriend and striking one of her coworkers at their place of work.

According to a press release from the Bradenton Police Department, 29-year-old Keith Roberts, Jr., a security guard at a local hospital, was arrested on Thursday (January 15).

A spokesperson for the department told Just Jared that Roberts was carrying a rifle and a handgun.

Speaking to FOX13, Police Chief Josh Cramer said that Roberts is believed to have walked up to Burnham‘s desk and shot her “at point-blank range.”

He told the outlet that he fired multiple shots at Burnham, a mother. Some of them struck a coworker that was near her desk.

“And then he, in what can only be called premeditated, took out a gun and started shooting at her,” Cramer said of Burnham‘s coworker, a practical nurse identified by the name Summer by Tampa Bay 28.

Summer‘s friend Taylor Strayer told the outlet that she sustained multiple injuries.

“Her left arm, the brachial artery had been severed so they had to go repair that as soon as she got to the hospital. And then her right leg was also shot, which completely shattered her knee as well as the bones in her upper leg and lower leg. She also had gotten shot in the left chest,” she recounted.

First responders used three tourniquets on the victim upon arriving on the scene, per the police department.

Cramer told FOX13 that the victim was struck with both guns, saying she was “lucky to be alive.”

Roberts reportedly fled the scene. However, witnesses provided police with a description of the suspect and his vehicle, which helped them quickly apprehend him.

Per the department, he was apprehended in Palmetto around 25 minutes after the shooting occurred. The Bradenton Police Department worked with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and the Palmetto Police Department.

Cramer described the suspect as “cruel” and “evil,” saying he was “a terrorist,”

“He terrorized those people’s lives,” he continued.

Per FOX13, Roberts appeared in court on Friday (January 16). A pre-trial detention hearing is on the books for January 23.

A GoFundMe for Summer has raised more than $39,000 at the time of publishing.
