WHO Regrets U.S. Withdrawal, Warns Move Risks Global Health Security

The World Health Organization expressed regret over the United States’ withdrawal, warning the decision could weaken cooperation and increase global health insecurity.

The World Health Organization said it deeply regrets the United States’ decision to withdraw, warning that the move risks making both the country and the wider world less secure.

The United States formally exited the World Health Organization on Thursday, saying it intends to pursue bilateral cooperation with countries on disease surveillance and public health issues.

WHO said the United States, as a founding member, played a critical role in historic achievements, including smallpox eradication and progress against polio, HIV/AIDS and Ebola.

The World Health Organization, which has 194 member states, coordinates global responses to health emergencies and works to strengthen international disease prevention systems.

Multilateral cooperation in public health is widely viewed as essential for early detection of outbreaks, rapid response to pandemics and maintaining long-term global health security.

The United States has previously accused the WHO of mismanaging the COVID-19 pandemic, allegations the organization has rejected as inaccurate and unsupported by evidence.

WHO said it acted quickly during the coronavirus pandemic, shared information transparently and provided guidance based on the best available scientific evidence to member states.

The organization said it hopes the United States will reconsider and return to active participation, with the withdrawal set for discussion at upcoming governing meetings.
