Tottenham have ‘ambitious’ plan in place to make up for quiet January transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur’s decision not to spend big on any late transfers in January had a strategic objective, according to a new report.
There was already a growing chasm between the Tottenham supporters and the club’s hierarchy, and that has only widened as a result of the club’s lack of ambition in the January window.
Ahead of the window, it was widely reported that Spurs wanted to make a statement by signing a big-money attacker.
That is exactly what the squad was crying out for, given their injuries and their ineffectiveness in the final third so far this season, but yet, Conor Gallagher and Souza were the only two players to arrive through the door.
Why Tottenham opted not to spend big on a forward in January
The i Paper has now claimed that by the time transfer deadline day rolled around, the fees Tottenham were quoted for proven forwards were loftier than ever.
This was the same problem that the Lilywhites faced when they were trying to add another left-winger to their squad last summer.
The report claimed that Spurs were determined not to ‘panic buy’ in the dying stages of the window and deviate from their long-term plans.
The club’s hierarchy decided that they would keep their powder dry and plan for an ‘ambitious’ summer window instead.
Thomas Frank did not want Spurs to resort to short-term solutions
Interestingly, it turns out that this strategy may have been approved by Thomas Frank even though he is now short of fit players.
This is according to The Daily Mail, who claimed that Frank made it clear to the club’s hierarchy that he did not want short-term fixes.
The Dane was allegedly only willing to sign off on arrivals that would improve Spurs over the long term, even if he may not be the one who will benefit from those signings.
