Mujahid Rejects UN Concerns Over ISIS Presence in Afghanistan

Mujahid rejects UN Security Council concerns, saying ISIS was defeated in Afghanistan and has moved to neighboring countries amid ongoing regional tensions.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected concerns raised at the UN Security Council about ISIS presence in Afghanistan, calling the claims unfounded.

In a statement, Mujahid said ISIS had been defeated inside Afghanistan and now operates in neighboring countries rather than within Afghanistan territory.

He argued that concerns emerge because Taliban representatives are absent from UN meetings, allowing some countries to present what he called inaccurate accounts of Afghanistan’s security situation.

Mujahid further insisted that Afghanistan is secure and that no foreign or independent armed groups are currently operating inside the country.

However, UN counter-terrorism officials told the Security Council that ISIS-Khorasan continues to pose a serious regional threat despite a decline in attacks.

UN officials recently cited an attack on a restaurant in Kabul claimed by ISIS-K, saying the group still maintains the ability to recruit and reorganize, including through online networks.

Representatives of Pakistan and China also expressed concern during the meeting, stressing that militant groups operating from Afghanistan remain a threat to regional stability.

While Taliban authorities deny ISIS activity inside Afghanistan, international officials continue to warn that the group remains capable of carrying out attacks and rebuilding its presence.
