23-year-old woman charged in South Berkeley shooting

BERKELEY — A 23-year-old Southern California woman is facing criminal charges in connection with a non-injury shooting last month in South Berkeley, police said.

The incident happened around 1:50 a.m. on Jan. 17 at an apartment building on Adeline Street, according to the Berkeley Police Department.

Police said two women forced their way inside a fourth-floor unit and followed two women to a stairwell on the south side of the building. The victims took an elevator back to the fourth floor and were walking back to the apartment when one of the suspects pointed a handgun at the head of one of the victims, according to police.

The victim pushed the handgun away, after which the suspect backed up and fired at the victim, police said. The shot missed the victim, but it hit another person’s apartment.

A second shot was fired before the suspects ran out of the apartment building and got into a car they left on Ashby Avenue, according to police.

Detectives identified one of the suspects as a resident of Vista, a city in San Diego County, and obtained a warrant for her arrest. Oakland police officers took her into custody for an unrelated offense Monday.

On Wednesday, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged the woman with burglary, carrying a loaded firearm in public and displaying a firearm in a threatening manner.
