'Trying to Return Now For False Advertising': God of War Fans Blast Sony Santa Monica For Locked Mode
God of War Sons of Sparta was a surprise announcement and a shadow-drop during the recent PlayStation State of Play, but it seems some fans are upset at developer Sony Santa Monica Studios for a post made to X, which confirmed a huge gameplay feature is locked behind beating the game once.
In the post from the official Sony Santa Monica Studio account, the developers wrote, "PSA: God of War Sons of Sparta 2-Player Mode. After completing Sons of Sparta's main story, you will unlock a challenge mode that can be played solo or with local 2-player couch co-op."
The game's official reveal trailer actually does show two-player gameplay, so it seems some fans were expecting the game to have co-op from the get-go. The clarification from Sony Santa Monica Studio has outraged some fans who were expecting a co-op adventure, with some even questioning if the trailer was false advertising.
"Why would you lock co-op behind beating the game? I don't want to play it twice; I want to play it once with my wife. Trying to return now for the false advertising..." wrote X user jaywow.
The co-op mode that is in Sons of Sparta is not the same thing as the main story, and with the trailer showing co-op gameplay, some fans feel misled.
"This might be legit false advertising. Unlock it from the start or get ready for refunds," wrote X user JayZed.
Other fans seem to be unbothered, given that the co-op mode is a completely separate mode. X user nicocava wrote, "You paid for a solo game...." to a user upset about the lack of co-op gameplay out of the box.
The game is also listed on the official PlayStation Store as being "1-2 players," which added to the confusion.
Neither PlayStation nor Sony Santa Monica Studios has released a statement, apology, or any additional information.
God of War Sons of Sparta is available now for PlayStation 5.
