Iranian ‘Seeking Refuge in Afghanistan’ posts have sparked a wave of fake social media accounts impersonating leaders like Ali Khamenei and Abbas Araghchi online.

A surge of fake social media accounts has appeared using the names of senior Iranian officials, publishing satirical and politically mocking posts that quickly gain attention online.

Accounts created under names such as Ali Khamenei, Abbas Araghchi, Ali Larijani and slain commander Qasem Soleimani have attracted thousands of followers within hours of creation.

One parody post attributed to Khamenei jokingly referenced possible escape scenarios during conflict, drawing hundreds of thousands of views and widespread online reactions.

Several parody accounts also exchanged humorous messages pretending to be senior officials, further boosting online engagement and confusion among users about authenticity.

Authorities have not officially commented, though some Iranian outlets warned that fake accounts misuse names and images of officials after verification badges disappeared from some profiles.

The social platform X allows parody accounts as long as they clearly state their satirical nature, or risk suspension for impersonation violations.

Similar parody accounts have previously appeared for global figures including Donald Trump and platform owner Elon Musk, reflecting a broader online satire culture.

Experts say parody and impersonation accounts continue shaping online political discourse, while users increasingly rely on platform tools to distinguish satire from official information.
