Special election to replace MTG could cause 'heartburn for Republicans': reporter

The race to fill former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-GA) seat could "cause heartburn for Republicans" if none of their candidates wins a majority vote in the primary.

President Donald Trump extended his endorsement last week to Clay Fuller, a local district attorney running in the March 10 primary, which will likely lead to an April runoff due to the state's election rules, reported CNN.

"The sprawling 14th congressional district covers 10 counties across Georgia's northwest corner, stretching from the Atlanta suburbs over to Alabama and up to the Tennessee state line," reported CNN's Jeff Zeleny. "It's deep-red Trump country, but with enough Democrats and independents to cause heartburn for Republicans in a primary that sends the top two vote getters, regardless of party, into a runoff if no one wins over 50 percent. Is there a true risk, do you think, for a district this red to be won by a Democrat?"

Fuller, one of 16 Republican candidates competing in next month's primary, said there's a risk of Democrats flipping that seat.

"Absolutely, and we've got to operate that way," Fuller said. "If Georgia 14 turns blue, it would be a tragedy for the president's agenda, and we as a party need to start having an honest conversation about that."

Democrat Shawn Harris lost to Greene in the 2024 election but won nearly 135,000 votes. Zeleny said a fraction of that total would likely vault him into April's runoff, and the candidate believes voters may be ready to turn the page on the Trump era.
